ABOUT THE ARTIST
June Tuan
Artist and cellist whose practice moves between the visual translation of music and the reinterpretation of travel, place, and culture.
June Tuan is an artist, management consultant, and university educator. She holds a Doctor of Business Administration from National Sun Yat-sen University, previously held senior management roles in the financial and insurance sectors, and has performed for many years with the Beyond Cellos ensemble. Her interdisciplinary background informs a practice attentive to rhythm and structure as well as to place, culture, and lived experience.
Her practice unfolds along two interrelated trajectories. The first is Painting–Music Fusion, through which melody, rhythm, harmony, and tempo are translated into color, line, texture, and composition. Moving between order and improvisation, the paintings develop the cadence and breath of musical phrasing.
The second trajectory is the visual translation of travel and culture. Drawing on mountains and seas, urban architecture, everyday rhythms, cultural signs, and human stories, she filters and reconstructs experience through memory to form a personal visual narrative. These works retain a sense of place while revealing new meanings that emerge through movement and encounter.
CREATIVE PHILOSOPHY
How might sound, landscape, and culture be seen anew on canvas?
Artist Statement
My practice unfolds through two interrelated trajectories: Painting–Music Fusion and the visual translation of travel and culture. Both begin with the reconstruction of perception and experience—the former brings sound into the visual field, while the latter allows place and culture to take new form through memory.
In my Painting–Music Fusion works, melody, rhythm, harmony, and tempo become color, line, texture, and composition. The seven musical notes correspond to a chromatic system, allowing a painting to unfold as a movement that can be both seen and heard. Here, the structural thinking shaped by management and academic research meets musical rhythm and painterly intuition.
In works shaped by travel and cultural translation, I attend to the histories held in landscapes, the rhythms of cities, cultural signs, and human stories. What I see, hear, and feel settles into memory before being selected, dismantled, and reassembled. For me, painting is a form of variation—a search for new visual relations and resonance between order and flow, the local and the global, and individual perception and shared experience.
